Thermafoil Cabinet makeovers

I found that I could easily remove the vinyl coating on the thermafoil cabinets by putting the blow dryer on it.  click here for my YouTube demonstration link   I used the highest temperature setting. After a few moments the vinyl separated and I was able to peal it off by hand. The painter’s heat gun was too hot.  It started reactivating the old glue on the cabinets and causing it to gum up. I used my blow dryer.  It “lifted” the vinyl without gumming the glue.   I literally did this in minutes…Easy-peasy.

Only the doors of the cabinets were vinyl coated and needed refinishing.  I didn’t mind the interior look of my white cabinets and decided to repaint only the outside of my cabinets and leave the interiors the same.  There was a bit of glue residue on the doors but the chalk paint that I used was Shabby Paints brand and it adhered well.   I painted my cabinets 4 months ago and they still look beautiful.

After you paint the clear sealer over your color, you can apply Re-Vax to change the look.

I first painted mine white and then sealed them with clear Vax.  When I put black Re-Vax over the white, it changed the color to this beautiful gray color. I was able to maneuver the black Re-Vax around to give my cabinets the look of real wood grain even though they are only MDF.
